Rotary Youth Exchange Terms: A Glossary

I was realizing as I was typing these posts that many of the words/phrases/abbreviations that I was using might be quite confusing for people. Instead of attempting(and probably forgetting) to explain them every time I use them, I decided to make a little "Glossary of Terms" or "Dictionary" that I will update as I go. Let me know if anything still doesn't make sense or if you know of anything I should add!

Rotary Youth Exchange Glossary

  • RYE
    • Short for "Rotary Youth Exchange"
  • Outbound
    • A rotary youth exchange student who is "going out" from here to another country. For example, I am currently an outbound, as are all of the other exchange students from here that are going to different countries.
  • Inbound
    • A rotary youth exchange student who is here on exchange from another country. For example, the exchange students who are here right now from Italy are inbounds.
  • Rebound
    • A rotary youth exchange student who was previously on exchange but now is back in their home country. Rebounds are great resources for prospective/current exchange students.
  • Rotary
  • Blazer
    • Every rotary youth exchange student purchases a blazer(navy blue for the USA and many other countries) on which they put pins that they collect. Nice and pretty near the beginning of the exchange, but about 10,000 pounds heavier with pins by the end of the exchange.
  • Pins
    • Every rotary youth exchange student leaves their home country with 200-300 pins that somehow represent them/where they are from. These can be homemade or store bought, and are traded with other exchange students upon meeting, and pinned on their blazers
